A Solo by Ei Arakawa with Officer Stephanie Velazquez

Stephanie Velazquez, a Philadelphia Police officer, participated in a Korean language training program in 1994 as part of her work to strengthen the relationship between the Korean American community and the PPD. Around then, the officer met with Siani Lee, a popular Korean-American anchor woman in KYW-TV (CBS Philly). With deep respect, Stephanie named her daughter Siani after her. Ei Arakawa suggested that Stephanie sing a love song both in English and Korean dedicated to this personal relationship. The artist also asks that this be a special performance only for female and non-binary audience members who are invited to celebrate female empowerment in a male dominant workplace. The performance takes place outdoors at the corner below the PPD headquarter building. Tea will be served.

Special Thanks: Chief Inspector Altovise Love-Craighead, Shavon Norris, Bellisant Corcoran Mathe,Eileen Behr, and Shinjoo Cho for Transcreation.

This module, SOLO, has previously been realized by Ari Benjamin Meyers in Hong Kong and Moscow. The Philadelphia version, created in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic explores the individual's sense of isolation and powerlessness in the face of various underlying power structures in our society that visibly or invisibly determine our daily lives. Five locations in Philadelphia were selected, each representing a place of decision making, for which five international artists were asked to create a solo work to be performed by one of the location’s employees, responding to urgent questions of accessibility to knowledge, health, security, justice and power. The solos are performed by the employee during their regular working hours on site., The  work is conceived as an intimate experience; only a small number of audience members at a time can get a glimpse of these otherwise unseen areas.
